What Makes New York a Hit with trend (Fashion ) Fans? 2011

What Makes New York a Hit with Fashion Fans?
by Shannon Holland

New York is world renowned as a fashionable destination. As would be expected in one of the planet's fashion capitals, a significant proportion of the economy is driven by the clothing industry and the city is the location of preference for celebrated designers, including Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and Michael Korrs.

However, it is predominantly the offshoots of this creative industry that make this city so 'fashionable.' They have spawned a massive cultural and media scene that attracts visitors from around the world. For mainstream culture, New York offers a wealth of possibilities. Tourists can visit MOMA to marvel at just some of the 28,000 pieces of artwork on display, or perhaps head over to Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic Guggenheim building to catch the current top art billing: 'Kandinsky at the Bauhaus.'

A Broadway Musical is generally at the top of a tourist's itinerary and even for genre enthusiasts there will be something worth watching. Choose a classic such as Mama Mia, or try out the newcomer 'Young Frankenstein.' To complete a perfect evening, be sure to dine in a fashionable New York eatery. Otto Enoteca Pizzeria, housed in the historic 'One Fifth Avenue' building will definitely give an authentic ambience. For lovers of classical music or Opera, The Carnegie Hall or Met will provide an unforgettable experience.

However, New York only really owns its fashion status due to the presence of a diverse sub-culture. It is when you venture 'behind the scenes,' so to speak, that you truly find the fashion credentials of a city. Move beyond the regular tourist art haunts and visit places such as the Morgan Library and Museum at 225 Madison Avenue. Here you will find a veritable feast of Degas sketches, rarely viewed by the public. Spend the evening at an 'Off-Broadway' show, easier on the pocket and stimulatingly different in content. For light entertainment why not watch 'Blind Date' at the Ars Nova Building, (though be warned, dates are selected from the Audience!) For something a little more hard-hitting, the current run of 'Black Angels over Tuskegee, (St Luke's Theatre), is getting rave reviews.

A city that is able to harbour a sub-culture, that is as large and dramatic as its mainstream offerings, is truly a fashionable destination.
